MY PERSONAL VIEWPOINT Following your passion is essential in business, whether you are young or not so young. In youth, you may find it instinctive to follow your passion. You just feel and know what you enjoy, and go with that. Mostly without fear! As you get older, some of the fears of life can start to creep in. Some would argue that you see life much more clearly when you have experience and responsibility behind you. And often, as we age, it takes a lot more thought and soul-searching to really understand ourselves and what will make us happy. With that done though, there still needs to be some reality checks, because building a business takes a lot of time, effort, and often money. Just because you love something does not make it a business opportunity. I find a really good check of my initial idea, is to scale it up (on paper) to a level that would actually provide a worthwhile income. Do some financial predictions on your time, and the money that will come from that. Do some financial predictions on the % of people who realistically will want your product or service. And from that "mock up" of your idea, you may quickly realise whether or not it could work. My final note, is that I am not trying to dissuade you from working through the next 5 steps. I simply believe that you need to incorporate your financial test BEFORE you spend a lot of time or money on your idea. Good luck! STEP 1: Forget BusinessTo start things off, forget about business. Often creative flow is hindered by thinking too much in one direction. This blocks the view towards better possibilities. Create an environment that inspires you. Put on some music. Make a tea. Or even go into nature. Do whatever makes you feel great. Take pen and paper... STEP 2: Delve into Your PassionsWrite down everything that excites you and that you are passionate about. Think about your hobbies. Remember what you loved to do when you were younger. Check your dreams for things you always wanted to do but never did. It is enough to jot down words, concepts and short reminders.Use one line for each passion. STEP 3: Categorize into KeywordsWhen you feel that the important things are on your list, look through the entries again and group them into areas that belong together. Give each category a keyword or key phrase (i.e. two or three words that explain what it is about) STEP 4: Check Your ExcitementRate each group on how much it excites you. Try not to thinkabout it, just feel and let that guide you. This is not about how successful anything might be as home based business ideas, but how closely it aligns with you personally.
